SQL 2016: Installing SQL Express


The following steps will show you how to install SQL Express 2016 or 2017 so Microvellum can use it in a network environment.

  2. To get started, you will need to have Microsoft SQL Server 2016 installed.
    1. Download SQL Server 2016 SP1 Express -- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-editions-express
    2. Be sure to right click on the file > Properties > and tick on the Unblock at the bottom, then click OK.
    3. Right click on the setup file > Run as administrator



  1. After you download the file, launch the exe file and let the install initialize until it comes to select and installation type. Select the Custom installation.

  1. Select where to download the files, the default location is fine. Click the Install button to continue.

  1. The installation files will download (this may take a while).

  1. Once you have installed all the files the SQL Server installation needs, it will bring you to the SQL Server Installation Center
  2. Select “New SQL Server stand-alone installation”

  1. Go through the installation by accepting the Microsoft Software License Terms for Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Express.


  1. The setup will run a check on your system to make sure that SQL Server is ready to be installed
    1. You must not run the SQL Server on the same computer/server that is also your domain controller
    2. Windows Firewall – You will need to set an exception for ports 1433-1434 through Windows Firewall if it is enabled, the instructions for this can be found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/install/configure-the-windows-firewall-to-allow-sql-server-access


  1. Once it passes all applications, hit Next.
    1. It may not change the Windows Firewall to Passed but if you’ve forwarded the ports, hit Next.
  2. Feature Selection – leave all selections as is and hit Next.
  3. Instance Configuration – This is where your will name your instance of SQL. You can leave it set to the defaults. Click Next.

  1. Server Configuration – Change the SQL Server Browser to Automatic and continue by clicking Next
    1. Sometimes installations will fail and you must change the SQL Server Database Engine's account name to NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE


  1. Database Engine Configuration – Set the Authentication Mode to Mixed Mode and specify the account sa Please make a note and save this password somewhere secure.

  1. Reporting Services Configuration – Install and configure, proceed to next steps until the installation begins
  2. The install will now proceed and finish. This could take up to a half hour.

  • Is reporting services needed?

  • Chris, not really, unless you're developing reports outside of Microvellum and need SQL access for that.
